Basic Photo Skills
This one-day workshop is an introduction to photography for beginners who want a foundation from which to build their skills. It begins with a discussion of position and timing, two fundamental aspects of photography, and moves through some of the important aspects of photography such as light, design aspects and basic technical aspects such as: the exposure triangle, depth of field and camera details. There is also time allocated for making photographs in the field and for sending a photograph for analysis after the class.
This course is meant as an introductory photography course and is designed as a precursor for a more detailed 6-week photography course, Creating Meaningful Photographs. Its main goal is giving the student a basic foundation and understanding of photography and to encourage taking better photographs.
As your instructor, I bring 40 years’ experience in photography, having worked for a variety of commercial and editorial clients. In recent years I have been focused on a variety of personal documentary projects such as Transitory Inhabitants, a four-year study of commuters and workers in Toronto’s financial district. I have also given numerous presentations to camera clubs across Ontario and self-published an educational book Creating Meaningful Photographs. It gives me great pleasure to share my joy of photography to a variety of audiences.
