Intermediate Bird Watching: A Tour of Fall Warblers

Fall migration is one of the greatest highlights for birdwatching. Observing the coordinated mass of wild birds traveling to their wintering grounds is an incredible experience. The opportunity comes as a transition between the seasons as fall progresses into the winter; a final goodbye before these birds leave for the season. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to spend a morning observing a variety of wild birds found in Ontario during the peak of fall migration. Warblers are a notoriously difficult family of birds to identify and fall plumage only adds to the challenge. Participants will learn how to identify fall warblers based on distinct characteristics; without breeding plumage or distinct songs to rely on, this workshop will build on identification skills in the field. We will kick off the day at Traill College with a brief introduction to eBird and ID tools (30 minutes) and head out to our wetland site, observing bird species found around Lakefield Lagoons (1 hour). Afterwards, we will head out to our forest site at the Lakefield Marsh, observing woodland and wetland species (1.5 hours). Finally, we will end our day at Trent Nature Areas (1 hour). While warblers will be our focus, we will observe a variety of species at these sites. Bird lovers of all levels of experience are welcome. Binoculars (and cameras) are highly recommended.
