Songbirds of Spring: Birdwatching Basics
Birds have captivated humans for centuries and it's hardly a wonder why. Whether it's their incredible adaptations to survive across some of the harshest environments or their tremendous migrations spanning thousands of kilometers, it’s hard not to be mesmerized by these amazing animals. The spring is a particularly unique window of time to observe birds as they return from their winter territories. The woods are filled with birdsong and males don their brightest plumage to attract a mate. To witness is a privilege and delight to any who observe.

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to spend a morning observing and learning about the diversity of wild birds found in Ontario. From wetlands to forests, we will examine and identify species at local sites across Peterborough. We will kick off the day at Traill College with a brief introduction to birding for any beginners and observe urban species around the campus (30 minutes). Immediately after we will head out to our forest site at the Otonabee Conservation Area, observing woodland and grassland species (2 hours). Finally, we will end the day at our wetland site, observing bird species found around Cavan Swamp (1.5 hours). Bird lovers of all levels of experience are welcome. Binoculars (and cameras) are highly recommended.

Location: Traill College; Otonabee Conservation Area; Cavan Swamp
