Mummies, Magic and Mortuary Practices

Get ready for some great “Mummy tales” this Spring. Penetrate the fascinating secrets of death in ancient Egypt and learn about their funeral practices, coffins and mummies. You’ll learn all about the fascinating Ancient Egyptian mortuary practices, funerary rituals – and have some close encounters with Egypt’s most famous mummies. Join Laura and Francois as they unwrap the mysteries of death in Ancient Egypt. You will meet some famous mummies and learn about how the belief in the afterlife inspired complex funerary practices which changed and evolved over time.

Saturday April 13th, 2024, 2pm - 4pm

The Black Pharaohs

Who were the Black Pharaohs? How did they come to conquer and unite Egypt - and what was their lasting legacy? This inspiring online event will shine a spotlight on the great kings of 25th dynasty of Egypt. Taught by a dynamic duo of Canadian Egyptologists Laura and Francois Roy - fresh from a research trip through the sites of the Sudan. -- They will breathe life into this history of these great kings, show their mighty works - and help you understand their eternal achievements.

  • You will learn:
  • ·       The origins of these great southern kings
  • ·       How they conquered and unified upper and lower Egypt - and battled the Assyrians (as referenced in the Bible)
  • ·       The accomplishments and legacy of this great Nubian dynasty of Egypt!

For thousands of years, the Nubians, "Vile Kush" as they were known who lived south of Egypt in present day Sudan were the great enemies of the Pharaohs. Their land "Nbw" literally meant the land of "gold" - and it was so very rich in this coveted mineral! The Kushites ruled as Pharaohs in the 8th c. BCE: In this engaging talk, Canadian husband and wife Egyptologists Laura and Francois Roy bring to life the colourful and triumphant events that took place during this unique 75-year period when the Black Pharaohs ruled Egypt. We will look at their achievements, their art - and the circumstances for their rise and fall.

Hatshepsut – Tiye – Nefertiti – Cleopatra-- and more! Their strength, genius and mysteries revealed. They ruled Egypt… many through their power and beauty, others through sheer cunning – and many through leadership mastery and genius. One even ruled as a king. They were extraordinary individuals living in a civilization where women enjoyed a surprising number modern rights – from owning property to filing for divorce. Even female deities in ancient Egypt wielded strength in some cases equal to their male counterparts. So why not queens? Let’s explore their impact! How did they rise to power? What was their legacy – and what monuments and artifacts did they left behind? What mysteries surround their lives and deaths that still fascinate us today?

Please Note: There is a 2-hour lunch period provided from 12- 2pm. There are several restaurants in walking and driving distance of Traill or you are invited to bring your own lunch.
